Often when people think of ways to make money outside their 9-5 they end up trading time for money doing things like door dash, uber or getting another side hustle that requires alot of time.
My goal with this list is to highlight businesses you can start alongside your 9-5 that don’t require an insane time commitment (5-10 hours a week) and can be scaled.
It probably sounds too good to be true, but the caveat with these businesses is that you will need some capital to scale but you can start small and expand over time. Let’s jump in:
Business #1, Vending:
When you think of vending machines you probably think of the old school chip dispenser that sits in an unloved corner of the office.
While those can still make good money nowadays the moneymakers are cold brew dispenser vending in high end apartment buildings, mini-markets in an office complex and healthy vending options.
These machines can often be leased (for low startup cost) and only take a couple hours a week to restock. Most of your effort here is finding locations to place your machines (and there are communites that can help)
Plus this meets the scaleability requirement, more machines = more money.

Quick note: I’m not associated with any of these businesses and these aren’t affiliate links they’re just some great resources I found when researching vending businesses.
Domanik Barbado has been in the vending business for 7 years, I like that his content shows the good, the bad and the ugly. Check it out here
Michael Hoffman runs Vendingprenuer, a community for folks already in the vending business or looking to get started. I like that he shows the many different types of vending that’s out there today. Check him out here
Business #2, Reselling:
This is personally what I do as my main 9-5 side business. I started out reselling stuff I already had on eBay, learned about Amazon FBA and went from there. What I like about reselling is that it’s easy to get started, there are alot of helpful communities and there are alot of tools that take the guesswork out of what sells.
If you enjoy estate sales, antiques, garage sales, or clothing you will do amazing on eBay. If you’re more of a look at the data to see what sells type of person Amazon FBA is for you.

Hairy Tornado (I know funny name) are a couple that have a very successful eBay store. This video walks through how to get started with an eBay business but they also have lots of videos about the types of items that sell well on eBay.
Flips for Miles started flipping sneakers in college and now has a million plus dollar Amazon FBA business. His getting started class is free and a must watch if you’re interested in learning more about Amazon FBA.
Business #3, Niche Websites:
This is one I’ll be pursuing in 2024 to add to my side income streams. Niche websites are sites that are centered around a particular product, place or service and earn affiliate income and/or sell courses. As an example there is a site that writes about pet rabbits: how to take care of them, what type of rabbit to get, the supplies you need for a rabbit, etc. This site is highly informational but also makes money linking to the products/services they recommend.
Niche sites take alot of time (writing, planning content, getting ranked) if you are starting from scratch BUT you can buy one that is setup and ready to build with a base level of content for $1,000 or so. This makes it a great entry level business that scales and can be run in your spare time without having to leave the house.
